About Us
Our Mission
MAITS exists to empower educational and health professionals to enhance and develop the services they provide to people with disabilities in resource-poor settings through sharing knowledge and practice.
Background Information
Many education and health workers and professionals working in resource-poor settings have limited access to training and continuing professional development opportunities. They may also have limited access to information about evidence-based practice and relevant research. Some training programmes for professionals in the disability sector in resource-poor settings are newly established and may lack a body of knowledge and expertise locally to support the ongoing training of these professionals. In these and other similar situations MAITS aims to fill in the gaps by funding experienced professionals from the UK to go on short-term visits. Whilst there, the UK professionals work directly with staff, on areas identified by the local organisation prior to the visit, thus enabling them to develop their own practice and service provision.
MAITS was incorporated in 2008 and became a registered charity with the UK Charity Commission (no 1126268). The Rangoonwala Foundation currently funds MAITS. MAITS is governed by a Trustee Board and is managed by a small team of professionals. These professionals have backgrounds in disability, international development and management.
