FAQs

Q: I am a UK-based professional. How do I sign up and then what happens?

A: Please go to the ‘Apply’ page on our website and click on the relevant link which will take you to an online application form. Once we have received your application you will be invited to a MAITS Information Day in London. At the MAITS Information Day you will be given additional information on MAITS, volunteering abroad and you will be able to talk to a MAITS Consultant about current volunteering opportunities, your interests and expertise.

Q: If I am interested in volunteering, is there a minimum or maximum time that I need to volunteer for?

A: Trips generally range from 3 to 8 weeks. Occasionally they are shorter but no less than 2 weeks and only if this will meet the needs of the local organisation.

Q: I am a senior teacher for a special school in a low-income country and we don’t have access to speech therapists. Can MAITS provide my school with a speech therapist?

A: MAITS specialises in short-term visits from experienced professionals including speech and language therapists. The aim of our visits is not to provide direct services to children and adults with disabilities but to provide training to build the capacity of local workers, professionals and organisations to meet the needs of people with disabilities. So in your situation MAITS could send a speech and language therapist to provide training to your teaching staff on working with students with speech, language, communication and/or eating and drinking difficulties. Examples of what MAITS volunteers have provided in the past include training in the assessment of students’ speech, language and communication skills, training on how to help children with disabilities participate in the classroom and training on how to work with children with autism in schools.

Q: I have no prior experience with special needs or disability but would still like to volunteer, can I apply?

A: Unfortunately not. We only accept trained and experienced professionals in the field of disability.

Q: I would like to volunteer in the future, but cannot take time out to do so now, can I still apply?

A: Yes, we can hold your application until you are available.
