The University of Ghana, School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences is one of a handful of African universities offering training in speech and language therapy. The programme commenced in 2016, supported by a small local SLT faculty. It aims to dramatically increase rehabilitation services for people with communication and swallowing difficulties in the region.
The university is seeking three experienced speech and language therapists with skills in clinical supervision of students in paediatric settings who may be willing to volunteer their time to assist with clinical education.
Volunteers would need to be available to commit for three weeks, from JANUARY 15 – 2 FEBRUARY 2018.
The position is voluntary and involves:
• Short term visit to Ghana (approximately 3 weeks) to work collaboratively with a nominated local speech and language therapist to offer clinical supervision in a community placement in Accra.
Conditions are as follows: • All positions are voluntary (i.e. the University of Ghana cannot pay a salary) • Fixed funding is available to support living expenses while in country – basic guesthouse accommodation, local meals, ground transport, local calls etc. • Funding is available to reimburse a fixed amount for vaccinations, health/travel insurance and visa costs. • Funding for airfares is not available Personal Qualities: We seek SLTs who are practical, enthusiastic, resilient, and flexible…. and who love a challenge. We are particularly interested in people who have experience working in cultures which are not their own.

CLED-Campaign For Learning Disabilities is a Ghanaian NGO with the goal of supporting the education and inclusion of children with learning disabilities by educating their parents, teachers and the public about learning disabilities as well as providing remediation and learning support assistance to identified pupils with learning disabilities.

MAITS is looking for a senior Speech and Language Therapist with specialist skills in working with children with neurodevelopmental disabilities. The aim of this assignment is to contribute to the design and delivery of a training programme for rehabilitation workers in Jamaica and to introduce the MAITS Guide for Community Health Workers. The trip will take place 12th-25th October 2016.
Your role will be to write the SLT specific aspects of the training package, deliver short class-based sessions on a communication and feeding and then to supervise hands-on support to the trainees during the day. You will also be involved in the evaluation of the training programme as well as the MAITS Guide. You will join a team of trainers including the head of the local organisation, an Occupational Therapist who has been involved in developing the training programme, and a project coordinator. You will be required to return again next year (July) for a similar period of time. This assignment is fully-funded.
The Director will be responsible for developing policies and procedural guidelines and its dissemination, anticipate and address critical issues, and proactively develop contingency plans, ensure Centre operates at the highest levels through scorecard metrics. The Director must be a Behavioural Psychologist with significant experience in leading and operating reputed neurobehavioral or autism centres.
Hours: 40 hours per week, with 30 days of paid leave per annum.
Compensation: Negotiable and in line with global standards. Details can be provided upon request
Relevant requisites for the position:
- Behavioural Psychologist with minimum of 12 -15+ years of relevant experience specialising in cognitive behavioural modification in children and having prior supervisory experience. Interest and aptitude for supervising, coaching and developing staff.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
- Must be able to provide therapy as appropriate with children of the relevant age group.
- Available to respond to employee and clinical needs as required.

The OT is expected
- To provide specialist support to children with developmental difficulties in acquiring physical, communication, play, social, emotional, cognitive, self-help and independence skills.
- To work collaboratively with parents/carers and educational setting staff in maximizing inclusion and participation.
- To be part of the child development team and to ensure that the quality and delivery of the day to day work is consistently maintained in accordance with relevant service plans.
- To be able to be a part of a developing service grounded in evidence base and follow and deliver program based on wide interaction with communities of professionals and parents.
- To be able to follow the best practices based on research to evolve and offer an array of individual and group therapy programs with prioritized child needs.
- To be passionate, self-motivated, and enthusiastic to be a part of the first cohort of “In-Sync Centre for Child Development” and be the part of development of India’s first of its kind model of pediatric intervention.
